It turned out to be even more complex than I thought at first. Despite the
fact that the system booted of the Setup CD, it didn't mount the CD, and
didn't seem to want to, so I couldn't get access to modprobe once I logged
in with the Setup CD.

There was a separate bootable CD in the disk set, a bit like the BBC, and
I was able to use modprobe with it to load the RAID drivers. But,
presumable because I had booted off that CD, it wouldn't let me unmount
the CD, so I couldn't switch to the installation CD to do the install.

As I said in my other post, I finally gave up on slackware and installed
RedHat instead.
