OK I've only started noticing this as of RH7.1,
though it may have been present previously?
The read bit on some executables is not set?
Why? are there sections of the binary that
ordinary users should not be able to read?

e.g.:
[padraig at pixelbeat padraig]$ find /bin /sbin /usr/bin ! -perm -444
/usr/bin/finger
/usr/bin/inews
/usr/bin/suidperl
/usr/bin/sperl5.6.0
/usr/bin/passwd
/usr/bin/chfn
/usr/bin/chsh
/usr/bin/newgrp
/usr/bin/gataxx
/usr/bin/glines
/usr/bin/gnibbles
/usr/bin/gnobots2
/usr/bin/gnome-stones
/usr/bin/gnomine
/usr/bin/gnotravex
/usr/bin/gnotski
/usr/bin/gtali
/usr/bin/iagno
/usr/bin/mahjongg
/usr/bin/same-gnome
/usr/bin/sudo
