Yeah, the mask wire on Trinitrons can be annoying if you see them.
Fortunately I don't. IT Direct sell CTX monitors, which use good
electronics, and Sony Tubes (I have the PR711F, which I really love, and it
has a built in USB hub too).

It may be cheaper to build a machine, but generally not by enough to make it
worth doing if you're worried about breaking something (getting a second CPU
is an expensive process if you can't claim Scam broke it :(). Though, if
you're interested in how things work, it's fun to build a machine (an older
machine might be more interesting, without the integrated video card/sound
card etc).
