Well, it's more because people don't think of themselves as _ignorant_.
Ignorance is not the same as stupidity, of course.   It's possible to be 
intelligent but completely ignorant of a particular issue.   The 
stupidity/lack of intelligence  is evident if the person will not acknowledge 
that they are ignorant..

That's why I hate the titles of the "* for dummies" books.   "Dummies" always
suggests stupidity to me, not just ignorance - so if I'm intelligent but 
ignorant of something, the "for Dummies" title is really off-putting.
