you sure it's gcc ? symbol name problems when linking to libraries
seems very unlikely. It would cause a _lot_ of problems, and the ELF
library format is very well standardised. ld would break horifically.
Unless the libraries are stripped .a's or something ?

When I said objects I mean going to a partially built source tree
with old .o's lying around and then building with a new compiler.
Or just the general case of using different compilers within the same
tree. That's always asking for a kickin from the system ;o)

this seems mmuch more like a redhat insanity issue than a gcc 
problem :o)

building KDE is a lot of hard work, I built all of it twice. 
qt and all of the varios subparts (kdeutils,kdeadmin .. kde*),
the second time on a 500Mhz celeron thinkpad, only took 5 days
on and off. And 4 weeks later Troll tech went and changed licenses
and Debian could include it *oh how I wept* :(

as for RPM, well forgive me for spitting it it's general direction,
dut it's caused me more headaches than I ever need :o)
