My Seagates are SCSI, anyway, so only slight heat is my problem :)
(Running a 1.2GHz-rated fan on a 750MHz CPU was the best move I've
ever done, when it comes to cooling ;)

I had some smaller (not plural gigabyte) Maxtors disks that alternately
worked on cable 1, cable 2, slave, master and cable select. When one burst
into flame, and the other merely released most of its magic smoke, I went
for another brand. Unfortunately, the other brand available was a WD 1.4GB
drive. It lasted 2 years or so, then rapidly developed bad sectors at an
alarming rate (1.1GB not faulty after a week of not really using it; by
then, I had a larger IBM drive that stills works great. And a nice, fast
Fujitsu that claims to be UDMA66.)
