On Windows, I see a quarter symbol in Pauls message, and the international
currency splodge in yours.

With the character set specified in the message header:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1
Windows users definitely won't see a Euro symbol in your message.
The message in the archive also shows a quarter symbol and the splodge (at
least in Windows).
