hey, i think i know what machine you're talking about. :)

basically, if you run mrtg from cron you'll have the overhead of mrtg 
parsing the config everytime. (which can be big if you've a big 
config). an alternative is to run mrtg as a daemon, then that parsing 
only happens once.
