[ILUG] Linux on iMac?

All this discussion about Macs suggests that someone actually has Linux
running on one. After defining half my hard disk as -- well, whatever
Linux wants -- and so making it unavailable to MacOS, both Linux PPC and
something else I downloaded produced so much installation grief (can't find
this, can't find that, lines and lines of white-on-black vowel-free
gibberish) that I reverted to MacOS.
Any recommendations for an iMac-tolerant distro?
And what's this 'macs are for designers'? I use 'em for scientific number
crunching, the way I used to use Crays--except I don't have to use FORTRAN!
Any guidance greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
--Ferren
