I believe rosegarden will display MIDI files as notation and also
allow you to edit them. The interface isn't great (there is an

Some cards don't have a hardware MIDI synthesizer built in. I think the
es1371 is one these. You can use timidity to do this in software.

as well. They've a large list of packages which might be helpful.
