I believe rosegarden[1] will display MIDI files as notation and also
allow you to edit them. The interface isn't great (there is an
unreleased KDE version in development) and was prone to crashing when I
tried it ages back (might be fixed in the latest release).

Some cards don't have a hardware MIDI synthesizer built in. I think the
es1371 is one these. You can use timidity[2] to do this in software.
You might want to check out the Sound & MIDI Software For Linux[3] page
as well. They've a large list of packages which might be helpful.
