The Hotmail access in OE is based on WebDAV, and is an interesting
demonstration of using HTTP to do non-HTTP stuff. It works in pretty much
the same way as IMAP, but, being WebDAV based, it doesn't require opening
an IMAP port on your firewall, but it does require HTTP/1.1 support, so
some older proxy servers and firewalls didn't like it (Squid has WebDAV
support in the current versions). Of course, it hasn't been documented, so
nobody else has bothered to offer either HTTPMail server support, or to
add HTTPMail support into any other mail clients.

As far as I know, Exchange 2000 has HTTPMail hooks, so that a company that
deploys a mechanism for allowing access to its intranet for employees on
the move can grant SSL encrypted access to mail folders over standard port
80/443 connections.

I've tried various combinations of IMAP servers and clients over the
years, and it's never quite lived up to expectations. The only problem
I've had with HTTPMail is that I can only use it with Hotmail (which is a
very serious problem). If I could get a HTTPMail server for our mail
server, I'd be looking seriously at leaving POP behind.
