You'd think that, with them guarding its secrecy so zealously and
fooling around with it, they'd at least have fixed its quality of
being prone to fragmentation problems, which it gained courtesy of the
VMS team that designed it. But no: It's still fragmentation-prone
after all these years, same as other Microsoft (and VMS) filesystems.
I wonder if you can still retrofit NT/XP/whatever to support HPFS. That
used to be the only way you had a prayer of getting decent disk
performance from an NT workstation, though Microsoft made doing so
progressively more difficult over the years.
