[ILUG] Devfs ?

okay ... retrieved laptop ...

the same line for me reads:
REGISTER ^cdroms/cdrom0$ CFUNCTION GLOBAL symlink cdroms/cdrom0 cdrom

changing to the same as below solved the problem ...
	(it's a 2.4.8mdk something kernel ...)

I intend bringing it bang up-to-date when I get time and bandwidth ...
(downloading kernel sources via a GSM dialup isn't fun !)
