never mind that, the real question is why you had to have OpenBSD:

but i'm not implying the problem is completely with the linux server.
the problem might well be with the openbsd box or network hardware.
that patch implements the rpc 'ping' operation, so that linux can
regularly 'ping' the openbsd's rpc layer, allowing the openbsd box to
not have to bump up ever increasing nfs timeout counters.
before this patch my diskless indy was agonisingly slow, constant NFS
timeouts - server at 100MBit, indy @ 10MBit, cheap hub between them
whose idea of bridging packets is 'drop them'. after applying this
patch to the server it worked fine.
