At some risk of driving my point into the ground: One can alternatively
disable ISA Plug'n'Pray on the card, so that hardware resources stay
where you assign them and probe reliably. This is the optimal strategy
with, for example, good ol' 3Com 3C509B NICs.
But fortunately, we've reached the point where ISA is nearly gone,
anyway.
