Sorry about the OT, but you seem to be a knowledgable bunch, and it is *nix
:)

I have a sco openserver 5 box which has been running for years without any
problems.

For the last 3 days, I have had total freeze outs .. even the console does
not respond.
I though it might be related to a dat backup which runs nightly at 3am, as
it seems to have got partially through the script which does the backup.
i.e. It checks for logged in users, and prints this list to tty1, then
continues with the cpio backup. However it then pops up the scsi info on the
tape drive, and I assume hangs.
i.e. This line pops up
%Stp-0 - - - Vendor=HP Product=HP35480A
... which would correspond to accessing the scsi dat drive on /dev/rStp0

I have to press the dreaded reset button, and then when it finishes booting,
I try the backup script again, and it works fine.

I have looked in the logs in /var/adm/messages and /var/adm/syslog, but
cannot see any error messages.
This machine runs all day with between 10-15 users at any time.

Where / How do I start "faultfinding" ?

Thanks,
Declan
