Having tried your suggestion, I get the following...

/etc/init.d/lpd restart
Stopping lpd:                                              [  OK  ]
Starting lpd: Warning -  ** cannot open '/var/log/lpd-errs' - 'Permission denied'
Warning - cannot stat 'if' filter '/local/etc/psif-generic' - No such file or directory
                                                           [  OK  ]
 
> what type of printer is it again?  The above setup works out of the box
> with a 4050... and a 4550 [instead of doing the raw queue stuff]
Its a HP 4000 N.

This is really started to get annoying, as I'm having very little luck with CUPS as well...
