I think HP must have gone on a cost cutting binge circa 1994. My first
deskjet was the DJ500C, which was still going strong the last time I used
it. I needed better colour and so upgraded to the DJ695. It had paper feed
problems from the first week. I finally got HP to sort it out (also seemed
to be a FLBOP problem). A month after the warranty ran out the problem came
back with a vengance, so I ditched the printer.
Likewise I know of some LaserJet III's that are still being used. But in my
experience the 4 and 5 models have persistent paper feed problems.
HP most probably realised that they could generate more sales by making
shoddy equipment so that people come back for more when it breaks down.
Hopefully they will realise how short term that thinking actually is. HP
used to be a good company, but I am very doubtful about its current
prospects. :(
IMHO, as always.
