ok, whoever designed compaq's search page should be shot.  here's the
deal so far:

    galeon: crashed after entering search term
    mozilla: crashed after entering search term
    old beta of opera: crashed upon entering initial search page
    netscape4: seems to be working...

ok, yes, both galeon and mozilla need updating on my machine, and neither
should crash, but on the vast majority of sites i visit, both browsers
do fine.

sigh.  pita web designers.
