[ILUG] Help with DVD I/O errors?

My wife just got me a DVD drive!

Once again, the deciding factor was that it had the word 'Linux' enscribed in
large, friendly letters across the front.

I have tried to set-up ogle to play the DVD, thanks to apt-get I was able to
install ogle, and the pre-configure script even told me how to fetch the css
decoder lib so it would read regular DVD's.

Unfortunately I am having some problems with the IDE?

At first I can mount the DVD with mount /dev/cdrom2 /cdrom2 without problems,
but I could not get ogle to reconise the files on the DVD. It just crashes.

However, the bigger problem is this, and I have noticed this with my CD-RW as
well when trying to access cheep CD copies. Now when I try to mount the DVD,
I get errors. It tells me that it needs the filesystem type, when I specify
iso9660, it then fails for wrong or faulty file system.

When I check dmesg, though, it tells a different story. Like I said, I've
also seen this with cheep CD copies, and on occasion I've even had to just
re-boot to get past it.

The relevant (I think) lines from dmesg are:

VFS: Disk change detected on device sr(11,1)
scsi2: MEDIUM ERROR on channel 0, id 1, lun 0, CDB: Request Sense 00 00 00 10

The particulars of my system are:
Progeny Linux upgraded to Debian woody with sid KDE.
Kernel Linux progeny 2.2.18 #1 Tue Feb 27 10:33:03 EST 2001 i686 unknown
I can not upgrade this due to problems with my SCSI? but thats another story.
Primary IDE connected to 6G and 13G hard drives. All Linux, no Windows :)
Secondary IDE connected to CD-RW, master and DVD ROM slave.
Both CD devices use ide-scsi module by default in Progeny.

I've never had any problems with my CD-RW when writing CD's, only if I try to
read cheep audio CD copies. I haven't done anything unusual with DMA settings
or anything like that.

Has anyone got any idea what is happening here?
I've seen these errors for a while now, but didn't worry too much about it, I
just dont rip cheep CD's any more. But I really need my DVD to work for me!

Cheers,

	John Gay
