[ILUG] Creeping windows-isation of unix

I've just upgrade to RH 7.2 and hit a completely trivial
disimprovement that pisses me off enormously.
In all the *nixes I've used over the years, most fonts played
nicely with inverted commas, unlike MS! That is, ` (0x60) displayed
as a proper left inverted comma, and not a grave accent, and '
(0x27) as a right inverted comma, and not the top half of an
exclamation mark (i.e. the old-fashioned typewriter "neutral"
apostrophe). This suits display on screen, and TeX-related
processing.
I have noticed more and more fonts not DTRT-ing, but not the ones I
use (-B&H-LucidaTypewriter-Medium-...). Until today, when even
Lucida is screwed up.
How can I get my old font back?
Is this part of reasonable technical progress (e.g. Unicode?), or
is it just accommodating to microsoft? (and the fact that
increasingly open source programmers were brought up on windows).
Bah!
