I'm running red hat 7.1 with the default kernel, the ESS is a bit of a pain
though.

If you run the 'lspci' command, you get a list of all of the PCI
devices attached to ytour system, of which the sound chip will be
one.
On the model 8000, the relevant line is :
02:03.0 Multimedia audio controller: ESS Technology ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI
Audio Accelerator (rev 10)
which is the Maestro 3 driver, as mentioned.
What do you have listed?
Also, what distribution and kernel are you running? Maestro-3 support
only came in late in the 2.4 tree, due to no support from the manufacturer.
