Ssh automatically sets the display etc when you log into remote machine 
so if its set up propperly you can run your X programs remotely as well.

I use rsync over ssh to do backups, it's relatively fast especially if you 
use compression.

uh, yes, very nice, but things like xon and dump still use rexec.

to the original question, make sure in.rexecd is installed and that
if you've changed xinetd's config file that you've hupped the server:
/etc/init.d/xinetd reload (or something like that).
