[ILUG] Source vs. Binary Packages

I'm a newbie with an old machine (running RH6.2) and am always
interested in getting the most of out of it. I was curious as to whether
this is true of any other packages aside from KDE. I have just recently
started to play around with the other window managers / desktops aside
from fvwm and so far am quite liking KDE.
I like to install from source (when I have the time) as I find it to be
a good way to learn about  both the package in question and my system in
general.
