You could use something like aproxy (search freshmeat) to proxy port 110.
This is proxying is in no way protocol specific - it just listens on a port
on box2 and when someone connects, it opens a connection to box1 on a
specific port and passes the data back and forth between the connections
without processing the application data in any way. I'm sure there are
other utilities to do the same but aproxy works fine for me for pop/ssl.
You asked whether its possible to do this - it obviously also depends on the
firewall situation between box1 and box2...
