Could be worse. I know someone with a 50 year old aircraft. It needed a
new propeller, and he found someone in the states willing to ship one over
for the cost of the shipping. Of course customs thought "Oi, what's the
price of a new propeller for a 747" or some such, and charged duty
accordingly.
Thankfully, said friend was in dublin airport over a year later, and
noticed his propeller by the wall (as he, quite rightfully, refused to pay
to duty). He asked could he have it, and the people there were glad to
free up some storage room, so it worked out OK.
