I've been using Java on Linux for 3/4 years in commercial
development and Sun's JDK 1.3.x has problems on Linux. I use the
IBMJDK with much better results. jakarta.apache.org is a good
place for pretty independent reviews of Java on Linux. The
tomcat people recommend NOT using Sun JDK on Linux, but the IBM
JDK instead. Sun's JDK is fine on Solaris and NT/2K. Don't know
about 1.4 on Linux.

BTW, I use XEmacs/JDE/ant for development and it's very slick,
although that's probably not a great solution for people who
don't know some emacs beforehand.
