Make sure that samba system can resolve the connecting system via
/etc/hosts or DNS server.
Any connection will do DNS timeout and then connect if this is not the case.
Have you timeout issues when connecting to other services ??
This is especially true if your are using the paranoid option in
/etc/hosts.deny
