Yes, the simplest approach is to set up the primary hostname
with an A record and corresponding PTR record. Then create
CNAME records for each of the ancilliary names you wish to
establish. Thereafter, if you have any subsequent IP reassignments
you just need to update the A & PTR records, and your CNAMEs
will follow accordingly. I wouldn't normally consider IP reassignments,
but one of my upstream providers dumped this very issue on my 
lap this week, and gave me cause to be grateful for not having
used more A records than necessary... It happens.

Give some thought to the hostname that you create the A record
for however - an MX record cannot point to a CNAME, nor can
an NS. But that doesn't mean you can't use a 'mail' CNAME for
your own connection purposes - just not as an MX in your zone file.
