Apple's need all those partitions, so you're going to start at /dev/hda9
IIRC. That should be an 800K partition of type Apple_Bootstrap. The Linux
fdisk will create that with the B command.
then you can do what you want from then on.
(Oh, and apple's own partitioning programs clobber everything, so it's worth
running them first, and leaving space at the beginning of the drive rather
than the end).
The reasoning behind all this is that when the mac loses it's OF settings to
tell it which partition to boot, it will boot the first one. If that's the
yaboot partition, then you get the menu to choose what to boot. If it's
macos, you have to play with Cmd-Option-O-F and boot hd:14,\\yaboot to make
it boot linux again.
