Sorry, wasn't clear enough.
"they had to hand over the algorithm to FBI" would in be meaning the
algorithm for cracking the keys 'quickly'.. It'll still take them some nice
time to do so, but once a key has been cracked, all messages/files belonging
to that key can then effectively be decrypted.

Not true.
For PGP to become commercial, they had to hand over the algorithm to FBI....
They had to choose between doing that, or go to jail if someone outside the
US was using the algorithm, and people were of course ;)
