I think this was the point being made in the original post.

In this case it is not a question of electronic vs paper voting, but of the
validity of the process. Hopefully the Irish government and the EU will bear
these concerns in mind before forcing electronic voting on everyone.

I do feel that if the software were constructed in such a way that party
officials (especially non-technical ones) could verify the correctness of
the vote, then electronic voting would be a better alternative to the paper
based version. I also know that it will take a while before people trust it
enough to part with the current version.
