In my humble opinion whichever software you decide to use (windows/ms office
or GNU linux/openoffice) you pay a price.
You want windows & ms office you pay cash and lose configurablity, stability
and your soul to b gates
You want linux & openoffice you lose some ease of install/use and maybe a
slight bit of speed in opening but gain from the knowledge that you are
using a standard complient product, one that complies to more than just the
imagainary ms standards (that ms themselves often don't comply to)

Another alternative, which brings stability gains, is to use Linx and run
Windows under VMware. VMware is the most stable Windows 'hardware' platform
I've ever seen. I've encountered bizarre behaviour with Windows 98 under
VMware which I think was simply Windows just will not stay up that long so
when it does, it can get very upset (it had been running for about 3 weeks
at that stage).

And when it does crash, as of course it sometimes does, being Windows, it
starts up again quite quickly.
