OK first things first

on the NIS server do:

# domainname
should reply with your NIS domain, in my case its called "cake"

rpcinfo -u localhost ypserv
It should reply, ready and waiting twice.

Next, make sure that the server itself is a NIS client
so on the server

ypcat passwd
ypcat group

Does all the above work?

Have you googled for the sshd error? I haven't but I would make sure
normal NIS works first.
