The drives aren't the problem:  The host adapter is.  And of course each
of the twelve-odd SATA chipsets poses a separate driver problem.

This isn't quite accurate:  Whether the RH9 installation kernel includes
a driver for your SATA chipset depends greatly on which chipset we're
talking about.  You'd have had no problem with 3Ware Escalade 8xxx or
Adaptec AAR 24x0 or LSI Logic MegaRAID SATA 150-6, for example -- but
Intel ICH5 or Promise Fasttrak SATA would have been showstoppers.

Again, not necessarily.  With Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. VSC7174 or a
(much more common) SiS 964 South Bridge, you're still out of luck.
