knoppix is a bit of a hybrid of Debian testing and unstable (with 
some external packages thrown in).   Unless there is a body of 
opinion otherwise though I think I will stay away from UTF-8 as no 
other language is currently setup to use it in Knoppix so unless 
people here are confident it will not lead to any issues I won't be 
the first.
