otoh roads in the states have a minimum width for a lane...

not exactly.  at least in ny a learners permit required you to have a
licensed driver with you.

depends on where you live.  bad habits vary by region.  i think drivers
in galway are much nicer then those in dublin - though the signal left,
turn right crowd are more common here.  boston drivers would get on well
in dublin.  drivers in kansas are very good - though roads tend to be
much straighter for much longer - how much can you do wrong?
