The cd is your OS cd, be it Redhat/Gentoo/Debian etc, most of them have
a disaster recovery mode which has the tool "chroot" on them. Simply dd
the old disk onto the new one, edit the files /etc/fstab and
/etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/grub.conf to reflect the new device, be it
from /dev/hda1 to /dev/sda1 etc and then mount each partition into the
new directory structure /mnt/somearbitaryfolder and run lilo or
grub-install from there.
I don't think its possible to copy the mbr unless the disk is the exact
same model, and even at that it would be a long shot.
