couple of graphics questions from a linux newbie-

first off, how do the equivalent of a safe mode boot in the windows world?

at the moment i am trying to install linux on a small form factor pc that i
got off ebay that has absolutely no markings or brands on it anywhere and no
documentation.

every linux install and live cd fails to get the graphics working because
the graphics don't work.
If windows has the same problem it boots into a 640x480 256 colours thingy.
Any attempt i make (using knoppix's boot parameters) to get it to use this
and x windows fails claiming that there is less than 6mb of AGP memory.
the manual claims to have 1280x1024 at 24 bit colour. i dont quite know how
much that is in MB, but its more than most of the other stuff in the room.

seconds of all,and probably will help with the first question, how does this
X window thingy work then?

Im used to a mac and any unix graphics stuff like open office comes in with
a script that opens apples x11 server and runs it for you and any distro's
run from KDE etc, so i have no idea

-how to get from a text interface to the server running
-how you actually get a program running in the server i just started?
