You are thinking of the swapfile, or perhaps writebackup (which doesn't
seem to work for me...) 

I'm talking about backup, as in the config option.
With it turned on when you finish editing ``file.txt'', a copy
of the prefious version of the file will be kept, permanently in
``backupdir'' as ``file.txt~'' by default...
