It's an advantage. If it goes wrong the
remote side get to dump it in the bin,
otherwise you'd have to do it yourself.
Seriously though there is no disadvantage
in doing it remotely. Most flash BIOS chips
these days are socketed so if you're unlucky
enough for the power to fail while writting
the flash then you will have to take a trip
to fix it. However the alternative would
involve making the trip also.
