Speaking for myself, It was actually a good point, and I'm glad you
posted it, because it taught me something that had never occurred to me,
previously.  Because of DMCA and other legal thuggery, the only available 
open-source driver framework for TV-out circuitry, the GATOS Project
(http://gatos.sourceforge.net/) is reported to be still a hit-or-miss
affair.  

So, if I get around to adding a "Why You Might Want Something Besides a
pre-r300-chipset ATI Card" to my knowledgebase's page about recommended 
video cards for Linux, I'll be sure to include that information and
credit you.

The interpersonal wrangling -- and the transparent handwaving about
BIOSes and microcode -- was indeed without interest, but also easily
ignored.
