Asterisk also does a great job as a SIP <-> PSTN gateway, or as a pure
VOIP PBX, which can easily interconnect with lots of other voip
providers - voicepulse, FWD, etc. for connectivity to other networks or
PSTN breakout.
I run my own Asterisk exchange to experiment with and keep in touch with
my sister who lives in the states, and to make very cheap international
calls via voicepulse. I also have direct dial-in numbers in the UK and
the US which ring my asterisk extension. Voicemail, call forwarding, ACD
too.
If you are looking to hook up multiple PSTN lines and internal analogue
extensions, there may be cheaper blackbox type solutions out there, but
for power and flexibility, * is hard to beat.
