That merely shows that the DEVICE NODE (file) exists. What distribution 
is this? Have you tried any other distributions? Have you tried 
knoppix? knoppix is wonderful because it's a bootable CD, hence you can 
test in a completely non-destructive manner, and it has amazingly good 
hardware detection. If knoppix works, then you take note of how knoppix 
has configured your hardware and map this to your installed 
distribution.
