That was it. I changed the colour depth to 24bit and now it runs grand.
I'm using Xfree86 by the way. 

The game runs OK in 640*480*lowest detail (which still looks amazing) on
a celery 2Ghz, 512MB and Gforce3Ti. Its pretty memory (& CPU) intensive
as the load times are just bearable, and upon exit I could feel it swap
to bits.
