[ILUG] Debian Install and localhost

Hi folks,

Sorry to have to ask this, but I got a new computer and have been
stumped after instaling Debian.

The difficulty is that localhost appears to have disappeared,
completely. I did #ifconfig and #route, both returned empty. I checked
/etc/network/interfaces and it consisted of two commented lines
referring me to the man pages.

I know I have had a problem configuring the network previously on a
fresh installation, but this is the first time I can remember having a
difficulty with the localhost. It has been a while since I did a fresh
install, and I'm completely stumped.

I don't think this is a machine-specific problem, as all hardware was
succesfully recognised on installation.

Any and all ideas will be gratefully received,
