Hi,

I thought I would share this after a phone call I got at the end of last
week.

Read "WARNING" at the foot of this article!

Problem with a Debian install (could have been others):
Machine would do 1024x768 no problem but the install did not bring up
that resolution.

How did I know that resolution was available:
Knoppix, Beatix SuSE Mandrake and RedHat told me so.

Resolution:
Edit XF86Config-4 and add in the extra resolution in the mode line region.

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X with the new settings.
It works!

WARNING NOTE: It is possible to set resolutions that your card and
screen can do for a few seconds and then pop one of them needs
replacing. [1]

[1] In 10 years of using X I burnt out one card - it was a crappy 1 meg
on board one and I happened to have a massive 8 meg video card beside me
so it dit not hurt too much!

Regards,

Paul

Q: How many computer virus infections impacted my Linux boxes in the
last year?
A: None
