That did the trick :)
No messing about with MBR's or anything needed.
Must have been the tar failing to keep all the vfat file attributes
like you say.

True - these systems were the same geometry so it was OK.
I wonder how I can get around systems with different geometry?
Can fdisk do it I wonder...
