I like using .whateverdomain.prv. This gives you a domain that looks
"normal" to programs which have overly strict tests for valid domain names,
and makes sure that you don't conflict with anything public. You can even
interconnect two internal networks sanely :-).
In your case, using .im.prv would still be reasonably short.
