[ILUG] un-Xed `makedepend'-ish tool for *ix (and Cygwin?)?

does anyone happen to know of a makedepend(1)-like tool
for *ix (plus, ideally, Cygwin), which is not buried deep
in the guts of the X11 development system?

`makedepend' itself is good-to-v.good (if a bit funky),
but its own source --- which must be available --- assumes
some/all of the X build system, making things awkward.

google™ has found a few things. for instance (this is
 from memory), a perl(1)-based `mkdep'(?) at SourceForge
which, however, is too simple --- most of `makedepend's
functionality is needed --- and it does not seem active
(`perl' is also an issue, but that is a different story).

or, in short, a `makedepend' "port" to not assume X?

the gcc(1) or GNU cpp(1) `-M' option family may or may
 not be an acceptable alternative.

cheers!
